Preparing for 2009?

We stopped posting here abruptly. I wrote that we came back before Todd had the chance to post about running of the bulls, so it sort of just looks like we disappeared.
Time in Austin has been fun and comfortable – too comfortable. The first month or so was easy, but since then we’ve both been getting antsy.
All we talk about is other countries. We can censor ourselves when other friends are around (sometimes), but when it’s just the two of us, the conversation is broken up by these sorts of non sequitiurs:
“Remember than Indian guy in Thailand who ripped off his shirt to show us his tattoos?”
“How much would you love to do this in Japan” (“this” applies to almost everything. Today it was frisbee throwing)
“Can you believe that just six months ago we were in Cambodia?”
Any fear I had of being complacent in Austin is gone. I love it here, but I can’t wait to be out on the open road/sky again.
I’ve been tempering this wanderlust with short trips. LA, Vegas, Kentucky, and Boston so far. Toronto soon.
Nothing is final until it’s over, but here are the rough ideas we’re thinking for next year:
Trip #1 (Jan-Mar) – Panama, Colombia, maybe Peru (Incan trail to Macchu Picchu)
Trip #2 (May-Jul) – Trans Siberian Express from London to Moscow to Beijing
Trip #3 (Sep-Nov) – Japan (yay!) and Korea
We’ll see what really goes down, but that’s the general idea we have so far. I’m not sure if Todd has some different ideas for some of the segments.
Next year’s blogs should be even better. More video, more pictures, and a surprise that I can’t talk about until it’s finalized.
One of the best parts last year, which we hadn’t planned for at all, was that a lot of people were generous enough to put us up in their houses or show us around their countries. If you live outside the US and would like to put us up (even for a short time), show us around, or take us on some adventure, e-mail us!

That is awesome that you are planning your next trip. I loved hearing about your last one, and I can’t wait to hear about the new one. You inspired me to take a backpacking trip. Sadly not as far or long, but it is a start.

If you’re ever in the Falklands I’d be glad to put you up for several days. My Uncle Lou runs a sheep ranch and I have my fledgling Penguin ranch I could show you around. There are also some blown up relics sitting around from the dustup with the Argentines.

I lived in Panama for 10 years, something you might try to do is talk to people who will be going thru the canal on yachts and see if you can sign up as line-handlers. We did this and were treated to two days a of amazing yacht-folk hospitality and an overnight on the Gatun Lake. It has been a long time, but I am sure people still do this.
Another spot is Barro Colorado a Smithsonian Research Institute location. Walk the jungle trails and listen to the howler monkeys howling away in the treetops.

Dear Tynan,
My Penguin ranch as it were is rather small and started when I found a few of these loverly birds washed up on the beach tired and hungry. I washed and fed them, now the lads, as I call them, follow me as I go about my chores. They’re always looking for a bit of something to eat and will grab your drink if not careful. Though I do not believe alcohol agrees with their avian systems much. I enjoy their funny sounds though mum made me put the Jacobsens in a pen away from the house as they are prone to braying like a donkey.

Yep – once you start traveling and then go home things are never the same again for the rest of your life.
The first time I traveled overseas changed me forever, so much that I eventually never came back. Now I live in Southeast Asia loving life, happy everyday I wake up
